A Study of the Correlation between Burnout Experience and Task Performance of Nurses

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore correlation between burnout experience and task performance of nurses. The subjects of this study were 188 nurses, selected at 1 University Hospital and 2 general hospital in Taejeon. The survey instruments used in the study were Peek¢¥s burnout experience scale and Park¢¥s task performance scale. The survey was conducted from April 29th to May 17th, 1993. The survey results were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social (SPSS) and can be summarized as follows ;
1. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of nurse¢¥s burnout experience according to their demographic characteristics ; age(F=4.33, p<.0l), nursing experience(F=2.38, p<.05), working department(F=3.03, p<.01), the reason for selecting nursing as a profession(F=4.28, p<.01), the satisfaction to the nursing profession(F= 23.76, p<.001), expected working period as a nurse(F=9.40, p<.001), mean to the nursing(F=2.45, p<.05). Mean score of burnout experience was 3.02.
2. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of nurse¢¥s task performance according to their demographic characteristics ; age(F=5.45, p<.01), religion(F =2.64, p<.05), marital status(t=6.13, p<.01), nursing experience(F=4.09, p<.001), monthly income(F=3.97, p<.05), the satisfaction to the nursing profession(F=2.86, p<.05), the nurse perception of more chance for professional growth(F=3.33, p<.0l). Mean score of task performance was 3.69.
3. There was negative correlation between burnout experience and task performance of nurses(r=-.292, p<.001).
